    Why 10mg on the Label Is Not 10mg of Peptide

    The most misunderstood number in the research peptide market is the one printed largest on the vial. A label stating 10mg feels like a fact: ten milligrams of peptide, weighed and sealed. In practice it is one of two quite different figures, and vendors rarely say which. Understanding the difference is the single most useful thing a buyer can learn about this market, because it changes how every price and every certificate should be read.

    The vial contains more than peptide, and less

    Lyophilised peptide is not supplied as the free compound. Peptides are purified by reversed-phase HPLC using mobile phases containing trifluoroacetic acid, and the product that emerges from lyophilisation is most commonly the trifluoroacetate (TFA) salt. The vial therefore contains the peptide itself, the associated TFA counter-ions, and residual moisture that no practical lyophilisation cycle removes entirely.

    This means the gross contents of the vial, everything the scale sees, and the net peptide content, the actual mass of peptide, are different numbers. The counter-ion and moisture can account for a meaningful fraction of the gross weight. Two vials that weigh exactly the same can contain materially different amounts of actual peptide, depending on the salt form and how dry the material is.

    How TFA content is reported

    Where a laboratory measures it, TFA content is reported as a percentage of the sample mass, alongside related measures such as water content. Together these let a reader convert a gross weight into a net peptide figure: gross mass, minus counter-ion, minus moisture, leaves the peptide itself. Some certificates report the net peptide content directly, which is the most useful presentation of all. Where no such measurement exists, the labelled figure rests on whatever the filling line was told to dispense, and nothing more.

    Purity and quantity are two separate questions

    This is the distinction the market most often blurs, sometimes innocently and sometimes deliberately. The purity figure on a certificate is the area of the main HPLC peak as a percentage of total peak area at a detection wavelength. It describes relative composition: of the ultraviolet-absorbing material present, how much is the target compound. It says nothing about how much material there is.

    A vial can therefore be 99% pure and contain half the labelled milligrams. Both statements are true at once, because they answer different questions. A seller quoting purity in response to a question about content is not answering the question.     What real measurements look like

    Read the table both ways. The PT-141, both Retatrutide results and the Tirzepatide all measured above their labelled figures. The Ipamorelin measured under: 99.65% pure, and 4.81mg of content against 5mg on the label. That single row demonstrates everything this article is about. The purity is excellent by any standard, and the quantity is still short of the label, because purity and quantity are different measurements and one can never be inferred from the other.

    What to ask a vendor

    Three questions separate vendors who measure from vendors who print.

    • Is the labelled figure gross fill weight or net peptide content? A vendor who cannot answer this does not know what is in their own vials.
    • Do you have independent measured-versus-labelled results? Not purity alone: measured content, from an identifiable laboratory, on identified samples.
    • Do you publish results that fall under label as well as over it? A library containing only flattering numbers is marketing. Variance in both directions is what honest measurement looks like.

    The labelled milligrams will always be the number in the largest type. The net peptide content is the number that matters. Until a vendor shows you the second, you are buying the first on trust.
